Dark green palmate leaves, petiole up to 1 metre in length with abundant leaflets. It is a multicaule palm with some trunks reaching more than 4 meters in height. Trunks are typically covered in the remains of dry, fibrous petiole. It is a dioecious species.
This rustic palm can tolerate all kinds of soil, though it thrives more vigorously in rich soils with abundant watering in the summer months. It is highly resistant to drought and wind, including sea breezes.
A typical addition to gardens, it can tolerate cold temperatures as low as 12° below zero. It looks best in rockeries, isolated plantings, corners, angles, patios, terraces, etc.; its shrub-like appearance enhances gardens of every size.
